I agree. I think for the most part, in the indie world at any rate, most of the people that really want to write an MMO are newcomers. People who have been inspired by the games they like. This is all well and good. I think the point I would make is, as you said Willow, ensure you're a good programmer. I just don't think that the majority of the people in the indie world, at least the ones i've seen, whom wish to start an MMO project are good programmers( or even programmers at all ). It's the level of naivety in their questions and threads that gives them away.
Yeah, offcourse that's true... I agree. Building an MMO without any background in programming is an interesting challenge And quite likely the person who plans to do so has not thought things through. But on the other hand. It takes 5 years to learn to program on a beginners level. And probably the same time to build a simple MMO. If you're determined disciplined and patient it should be doable.
Because seriously, MMO's are not complicated... Just big. They don't require state of the art graphics sound or anything. The only thing that requires serious thought is network code, protection against cheaters or hackers and data storage. It's a web server with a graphical browser, that's basically it.
I'm guessing people will not be programming the next WoW... But something like a mud with pictures (Possibly even 3d if they use a good library) should be doable.
I'm also guessing they use the right language. Which for beginners would not be C++, I'm guessing C# or Java, since those are easier on beginners.

Always fun to have a spam bot resurrect 2 year old threads. Gotta love the internets.

Never fear, Little Coding Fox is here.
Does anybody still remember those posts where they give a percentage of profits?
"Each member gets 10% of profits <...> I need 8 artists, 12 coders, and 5 game designers."
What about those guys who want insane rates for their servers? Remember those WoW private servers where you get 50 times everything? Kill a wolf once, you're up from lvl 1 to lvl 8! Naice! And you even got 5 Golds to boot! BEST GAME EVER.
What about those who get advice yet ignore everything people said to them, claiming that they are better than them? Or who use free forums yet claim to be able to pay for their members? Best way to promote yourself professionally.
Let's also not forget about those who show they got something. Except when it look like it was stitched together on MsPaint or when they're 3D renders with 3D Studio Max 2050 Xtreme Beach Volleyball, yet people go "WOW THAT'S AWESOME" at them.
I could probably think of more things to bitch about, but i gotta GTFO to do incredibly productive stuff. Discuss away my amazing powers of humor and such.
